Dear Families,
What an exciting past two weeks it has been with many activities occurring at Galilee. Over the past two weeks our Year 4, 5 and 6 students have visited Melbourne Museum to attend an excursion based on climate change. This has been a wonderful experience for the students as they embark on their Term 3 STEM Based Inquiry that is all around ‘Saving the World’.
Our Year 6 students have started their unit of work on Confirmation. Students and their families gathered in the Ss. Peter and Paul Church last week to learn about the Sacrament of Confirmation and start the conversation together, as they prepare to receive the Sacrament later this term.
Our Year 4 students participated in a Hoop Time Competition today at MSAC. Year 4 students competed against Catholic schools from the Southern Region. They all returned to school today happy and exhausted. We are very proud of their efforts and would like to thank the staff and parents who attended, coached, scored and supported the students today.
Earlier this week Amy Burns and Dave McLeish attended a STEM Conference in Sydney. The focus of the Conference was STEM education and how it allows us to foster collaboration, strengthen critical-thinking skills, problem solve, create real-world scenarios, and prepare our students for the future. Educators from Primary, Secondary and Tertiary level from around Australia attend the Conference. Amy and Dave learned about the importance of incorporating STEM skills across all subject areas and the importance of developing creativity, inquiry skills, design thinking, critical thinking and collaboration skills. Amy and Dave heard about ideas and projects from teachers and students in all subject areas from around Australia and they also heard from a few industry leaders who spoke about the importance of STEM education in the growing need of STEM based employees in a range of industries. As you would be aware, STEM Based Inquiry has been a focus at Galilee this year. We feel excited about the direction Galilee is taking in STEM education and in preparing our students for the future.
Next week, two groups of Year 5 students will represent Galilee at the STEM MAD Student Showcase. The STEM MAD Student Showcase is a celebration of student learning designed to acknowledge and promote STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems and demonstrate the particularity of Catholic Schools; encouraging students to make a difference (MAD) in the world by acting for justice and the common good. This aligns with the papal call for action in Laudato Si': On Care for our Common Home.
STEM MAD has been taking place in Melbourne since 2018 with select Catholic Schools from around Melbourne participating.
Students in Year 5 completed a STEM Based Inquiry based around designing something to improve their lives or the lives of those around them. The two groups who have been selected to participate in STEM MAD have each designed a product that will improve the life of someone with a disability. One group will be presenting their Ves' that is equipped with an electrical pressure circuit that alerts a person with a vision impairment of an upcoming object. The second group have designed a pair of glasses and a pen that will improve the life of someone with Dyslexia. We wish the students every success at the STEM MAD Showcase and we hope to share their projects with you in our next Newsletter.
Next week we welcome back Linda Grillo who has been on approved leave to visit her family in Portugal. We would like to thank Maria Panagiatopoulos who has been taking Visual Art lessons for the past three weeks.
We are now entering an exciting phase of the building project with the finishing touches being completed to the interior and exterior of the building. We are expecting the building to be completed within the next four weeks. It has been a long process with an unusual number of obstacles, but we believe that we are delivering a challenging project with precision and quality.
Concert Preview
It has been wonderful to see many of our students starting to prepare for the upcoming concert. The enthusiasm of the students has been outstanding as they learn new dance routines with the amazing teachers from Danceworld. We hope you enjoy this short preview.
School Photos have been rescheduled to Tuesday 9th August 2022.

Last week, the Year 5s visited the Melbourne Museum for a Climate Change Workshop to launch our Inquiry unit. During the workshop we learnt about some big concepts including weather, climate and what causes climate change. The students were each given a topic and created a poster to promote some positive changes that can help the environment. We had a whole lot of fun exploring many different exhibitions around the Museum.
Arte was delighted to return to school this week. She is on light duties and we are monitoring her closely to ensure she is not getting tired. She has settled back into her routine and is loving interacting with the kids again. The kids have been very empathetic and are taking great care of her.
Thank you to those people who dropped off towels, Advanced Vetcare in Kensington were very grateful for the donation.
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated this term. The dates are as follows:
Prayer for our Confirmation Candidates
Come Holy spirit, be with our Confirmation candidates always.
Show them how to use Your seven gifts: Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Fortitude, Counsel, Piety and Fear of The Lord in ways to help their community, family and friends.
Allow them to faithfully follow Jesus every day of their lives.
Help them to make wise and good decisions.
Comfort them in times of trouble.
Celebrate with them in times of joy.
Reveal your everlasting love to them, so they may grow as your precious child, becoming everything you destined them to be.
We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen
Winter is definitely upon us and here are some fun activities we have engaged in during PE when it has been too wet and rainy outside.
Parents, Volunteers and Visitors are required to maintain a current Working with Children Check if they would like to assist with a school activity. Upon review we have noticed a number of expired WWCC cards on file.
If yours has recently expired or you have not already submitted one, please bring a copy of your WWCC in person to the school office or email directly to iwebster@gsm.vic.edu.au.
In addition to this we strongly encourage parents to upload a picture of their WWC card to their Operoo profile so that teachers are able to access this information when organising school activities and excursions.
If the school does not have a copy of your current WWCC, you may be unable to assist with school events.
A reminder that school photos will take place Tuesday August 9th 2022.
Please wear full winter school uniform. If you have PE on this day, please wear your full winter school uniform and bring your runners in your bag.
The Year 4's will depart Galilee for Angahook Camp at 9am on Wednesday 3rd August and return to Galilee at approximately 3:00pm on Friday 5th August.

Kids just want to be kids, but instead of playing sports with their friends or catching butterflies on a sunny day, kids with genetic diseases are getting liver transplants, taking dozens of medications, or getting their next dose of chemotherapy. It shouldn’t be this way. By donating through Jeans for Genes, you can help the scientists at Children’s Medical research Institute find cures, so these kids can go back to being kids.
Galilee will be holding a fundraiser event on the very last day of term, Friday 16th September to help this amazing cause. We have set up a website where you will be able to directly donate money to or you will be able to give $2 on the day and wear your favourite jeans to help support this amazing cause.
