Issue #2

From the Principal

Dear Families,

I congratulate everyone for the start to the 2023 school year. It has been highlighted by the transition of new staff and students; greater use of our outstanding new facility; two school camps; highly successful parent functions, student learning and much more.

See below for a copy of our School operating Model (governance structure).

Student Leadership

At Galilee, we believe that all students within our community are leaders. We explicitly teach our students leadership skills and give them a variety of opportunities to lead within and outside the classroom.

We do have a number of opportunities for students to take on formal leadership positions and lead school wide initiatives.  Tomorrow at our first School Assembly for the 2023 year, our SRC student leaders, Social Justice student leaders and Year 6 student leaders will be presented to the school community with their badges.  We invite you all to attend our first School Assembly for the year tomorrow in the Basketball Stadium at 2.50pm.

At Galilee, student leadership is a valuable opportunity for students to develop their skills leading, organising and sharing their voice as active members and representatives of their community. Through the many student leadership roles, students have the opportunity to contribute to decision-making within the school and take on responsibilities for a variety of school activities and social justice projects.

Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group of students from Year 1-6, elected by their peers to represent all students within the school. SRC's work democratically to represent the student body in school decision-making and organise ways for students to participate in and enjoy school life. Students will be taught how to run class meetings with their peers to inform their class of what was discussed at SRC meetings and to seek feedback from their classmates on different aspects of school life. SRC meetings will be held regularly throughout the year.

Social Justice Leaders at Galilee are empowered to become advocates within our school and local community by putting their values into action. They meet regularly to learn about social justice issues, develop leadership skills and lead students to take action on social justice issues within our school community.

Year Six Student Leaders are role models who take on extra responsibilities across the school. They are called upon to run school assemblies, conduct school tours, create slideshows for school assemblies, run special days such as Footy Colours Day, Book Week Assembly and activities on Galilee Day.  The Year 6 student leaders assist staff in the running of Galilee sporting events, Social Justice fundraising and awareness raising events. Year 6 student leaders liaise with staff to ensure that student voice underpins decision making process that is embedded at Galilee.

We congratulate our elected student leaders for 2023 and wish them every blessing in their role this year.

Year 4 Camp to Angahook

On Wednesday, our Year 4 students boarded a bus bound for Angahook Camp in Anglesea. They participated in beach activities on Wednesday and settled into camp. Today they are participating in outdoor education activities including the Giant Swing, Archery and Low Rope Course. Tomorrow the students will complete a bike ride and kayaking. It is a wonderful camp that allows students to challenge themselves on a variety of outdoor activities and work as a team, allowing the students to bond with each other, learn more about themselves and each other. We thank the staff who are on camp with the students; Alex Pensini, Rachel Leahy, Brighid Deamer, Seb Greene, Dan Booth and Jack Sandow. We look forward to seeing the students return on Friday afternoon.

Year 6 Camp to Canberra

Last week, Year 6 students from Galilee attended an education tour of the national capital. Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. More information about the camp can be found later in the newsletter.

The students visited the Australian War Memorial and participated in the Last Post ceremony. It was streamed live and our students and staff were able to be seen participating by parents back in Melbourne.

We thank the staff who attended the camp and ensured the safe arrival of students back at Galilee late last Friday evening.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. The Australian Government funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program goes towards Year 6 Camp to Canberra costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and has been factored into the cost that families are charged for camp.

Lent

Shrove Tuesday will be next week and some classes may be making pancakes and/or learning about the tradition.

The whole school will be celebrating Ash Wednesday Mass at 9:15am on February 22nd (Sts Peter and Pauls) and parents are welcome to attend. Preps will not be in attendance, due to completion of assessments.

2024 Enrolment

We already have a large amount of applications for 2024 enrolments. If you have a sibling starting at Galilee in 2024, and are yet to submit an application, you are encouraged to complete the form (from website or from school office) ASAP.

On Friday February 24, assembly will be at 9:15am. New families (and current) are invited to attend.  We will start with a whole school assembly followed by tours and morning tea.

Stem at Galilee

It’s been a super fast start here at Galilee this term. Our Maker-space (top floor) and STEM room in the Mal Orr Studio (1st floor) in the new building have been set up and proved to be fantastic spaces for students to explore everything STEM.

Our focus at Galilee is for students to investigate the various steps of the Stanford Design Process as we inquire about our Big Idea on Harmony this term.

Year 5 has started on our provocation investigating;

How can we evacuate out of our new building in the safest and quickest way possible?

Using the Ideate stage of the process, we generated as many solutions as possible. We aim to use eggs as a proof of concept as we are in the early stages of developing our experiment.

We compared dropping a basketball and a tennis ball from the top floor to investigate the forces at
work that we need to consider including;

Gravity
Potential energy
Air resistance
Impact force

Students are in the early stages of learning what a Scientific PRAC is as a way to write a procedure text. We have started through assisting in Ms Hickey’s bike and assembling it in the STEM lab.

Our year 6 students explored the various applications of STEM last week as they went to the CSIRO in Canberra. Our Galilee school captains, Ben and Chloe expanded on their time at the CSIRO. They explored the top innovations created and developed by the CSIRO that benefit not only Australians but people worldwide today such as;

- The creation of Wifi
- How moths were bred to contain the prickly pear cactus
- Timeline of the CSIRO’s biggest events
- Development of the Myxoma virus development to contain feral rabbits
- Bee backpacks to research the declining bee population

A particular highlight for the Yr 6 students was their scavenger hunt around the CSIRO which led to a very high finish between the teams with only a point difference between them.

We look forward at the upcoming opportunities classroom teachers have planned across the school as we engage in STEM learning at Galilee.

The highest bidders of the VIP Rockstar Carpark, the Wynne family, redeemed their week of priority parking this week.

On Monday they were greeted by chanting of “VIP” by the students and confetti balloons for Dottie.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday they were greeted by hot chocolate and coffee.

On Friday they were greeted with their hot drink orders as well as confetti. At pickup, we farewelled the rockstar family for the weekend with a bottle of prosecco and two champagne flutes.

Each day Dottie entered the school grounds early and Andrew also got early access to the school grounds for pick up.

We hope the Wynne family enjoyed being treated like VIPs. It was a pleasure to greet and farewell them each day!

It has been suggested that perhaps for the next live auction, we could auction off not one, but TWO VIP priority parking. Stay tuned!

TheirCare

Good afternoon, dear families!

We have had an amazing first two weeks in term 1!  We have welcomed 25 new  students out of 52, and some “old new” ones as well.

The last 2 weeks have been dedicated to sport and various things, which lead to so much excitement and happiness.

We have played some amazing games:

Balloon Volleyball
Basketball Cup Game
Zombie Tag
Colour Touch
Octopus
Morning Gym
Farmer Sam
Minus 5 Basketball Game

And we have been busy doing some arts and craft activities making things like flowers, magic wands, dream catchers, and puppets.

Please don’t forget that we are in the summer now, so we must follow the sun smart policy: no sunscreen, no hat = no playing outdoors.

Please don’t forget to book your children at www.theircare.com.au

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy warm weather!
