Issue #3

From the Principal

Dear Families,

I hope you are having a wonderful week.

On Tuesday, we held our Year 3 to 6 Athletics Carnival. It was the last day of Summer, despite the cool weather.  Last year during the carnival, it was too hot and this year it was almost too cold.  Only Melbourne could produce weather so diverse.  Despite the weather, the students participated wholeheartedly and had a really enjoyable day. I have to compliment Mr. Greene and the entire staff for their enthusiasm and dedication during trying conditions.  We were also supported by a number of parent helpers and observers.  In Term 4, Preps - Year 2 students will hold a carnival on the school grounds.

We are currently working our way through 2024 enrolment applications. I’m pleased to announce that we have a very large number of families wishing for their child to attend Galilee from 2024.  This process has followed the Open Morning held last Friday where we had a large number of people in attendance.  We are proud of our reputation in the local community with so many people at our Open Morning.  Many of my principal colleagues in other Catholic primary schools are not experiencing the same volume of people wishing to attend their schools.  I’d like to thank our current families for communicating news of our wonderful school to the local community.

A number of parents have been asking me about our new staff and how they are settling in. I could not be more impressed by their professionalism, enthusiasm, hardwork and dedication to the students.  I have marveled at how quickly they have settled in and made a contribution to our school community.  I’d also like to thank our students and parents for the welcome that they have provided to our staff.

2023 Galilee Priorities
In 2023. we have a number of priorities but below I have outlined four:

1/ Providing students with cognitively demanding tasks in Mathematics, that will maximize learning and growth.

2/ Continued expertise and learning in STEM, in classrooms and through the involvement in external projects.

3/ Links between the teaching of Religious Education and real world events, using the resource: Pedagogy of Encounter.

4/ Further links with our parents in learning and involvement in school events.

Last weekend I was lucky enough to see my daughter get married. My son-in-law has cancer and his positivity and resilience has inspired me to participate in the Ride to Fight Cancer (Ride4Jed) and to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. If you would like to donate, please click this link here.

Please watch the video below for a summary of the above article.

Take Care,

Simon Millar

Year 4 Camp Angahook

Year 4A and 4R were going to Angahook holiday camp in Aireys Inlet. The teachers that came along were Mr. Pensini, Miss Leahy, Mr. Greene, Mr. Booth, Mrs. Deamer, and Jack. The Angahook staff were Tim, Fin, Ricky, Luke, Angus, Julie, Tex, Simon, and Marty the puppy dog.

I gripped Francesca’s hand tighter than a champion hand wrestler. It felt like a stampede of elephants raging through my tummy. I sat down, nervously waiting for the bus to start. In what felt like a second we were on the freeway zooming to our next stop. We got off the bus at a park in Geelong and ate our snack. I was the fastest to finish so I got to play. Soon after that, we got back on the bus. Francesca and I played a game called Mr squiggle. It's where one person draws a squiggle and the other person tries to make a picture out of it. We finally made it to Aireys Inlet beach. Now, bon appetit. It was lunch.

Mrs. Deamer told us to put on sunscreen because there was extreme UV after we finished lunch so we could start the Beach Olympics. We were split into two groups. My group did the Beach Olympics first. We got split again into three groups and we had to come up with a team name. We ended up with the Sprinkle Cupcakes. Our first event was tug o war. We beat one team and lost to the other making Super Girls victorious. But Sprinkle Cupcakes won the beach relay. Then we swapped around and looked at the rockpools and caves. Matilda found a red starfish. Then we had to do a three km walk to camp. Once everyone was ready we started our looong walk back. At about halfway there my friend Ellie offered to carry three people's bags including hers all the way to camp. When we got to camp the instructor Ricky told us where the dorms were, who was in them, safety checks and time tables for all three days. I was in a separate cabin with 4A girls. That night we had spaghetti bolognese for dinner and jelly for dessert. Ellie was on duty and gave us our food and collected our dirty dishes. Dinner was spectacular.

After dinner we did orientation. Orientation is where you look for letters using a map around. There were two maps. One was the kanga track and the Aussie track. We got five right on one and two on the other. After that, we got ready for bed, chatted for a while then went to bed.

It was a great start to camp.

On Wednesday the 16th of February 4A, 4R, Mr Pensini, Miss Leahy, Mr. Greene, Mrs. Deamer, Mr. Booth & Jack went to Angahook campsite for camp.

On day 2, we woke up and had free time while the owners called up a duty group for breakfast. I was not in the duty group but it is when you help your table while they are eating. For breakfast, there was toast and cereal. I had 2 slices of toast with honey. It was delicious!

After, Breakfast we split up into 4 groups. In my group, there was Ella, Vivienne, Lily L, Lily B,  Amelia, Deio, Peter, Max, Declan, Jay, Ollie, Mr.Pensini, Rickie, and I. We started with Archery. It was Boys v Girls and the girls won 42 to 76! When we were finished, we had a piece of Fruit and a piece of Lemon slice. It was so yummy!

We had the Giant swing after morning tea. Ella was first so the rest of us were pulling the rope. It went Boy, Girl, Boy until it was finally my turn. When it was my turn everyone was pulling me. I was relaxed at the start but then I was screaming quite loud when I was in the air. It was extremely fun!

We then had sandwiches for lunch. After that, we had the option of free time or mountain biking. First I had free time but soon after that, I went on the bike ride. I was glad that I went because it was amazing although the person in front of me kept stopping and starting. When we got back it was dinner time. There was Chicken schnitzel and vegetables. For dessert, we had chocolate moose. It was so good!

Then we watched Finding Nemo. We had our pillows and got comfortable while Mrs. Deamer switched on the movie. When the movie was over we all went to bed. Even though people kept on talking I managed to fall asleep.

It was so much fun!

Day 1
Today was the day finally, it was Camp! Firstly I got ready for my pastel green T-shirt and my denim shorts, it was amazing! So, I got onto the bus and I paired up with my friend Sofia, And we had a 2-half hour drive!

Also, we had a nice snack in Geelong. We hopped back on the bus and before you could know it we were at Aireys Inlet doing beach Olympics. We saw caves, baby sharks, starfish, and fossils! After that, we went back to camp and had a break with Zooper Doopers. It was getting dark, but it was not enough to top it off! So, we climbed up the mountain. The camp was awesome!

Sarah Reid 4R

On a bitter Wednesday morning, we sprinted onto the long school bus and since we were so exhilarated we just threw our luggage in the bus.

We were going to Anglesea for our camp. The campsite was called Angahook Camp! I couldn’t believe the day had finally arrived, I could barely sleep.

On a scorching Thursday morning, I jumped down off my bed, I just wanted the day to begin. Once everyone was dressed we were allowed to go outside and have some free time. We were dancing around during our free time. After our free time, we had brekkie. It was toast, orange juice, and some people had cereal.

Finally, we got sorted into our groups, I (Abigail) was with my friends Lila and Mia. We went on the famous ‘giant swing’. At first, we were a little nervous. Once we got harnessed in, my stomach filled with nervous/excited energy. Once I got to the top everyone started to count down ‘3 2 1! DROP!’. My stomach did a somersault and all the air pushed out through my lungs and I couldn't breathe or scream. I got to do it again. I had the same feeling but this time I let go of my hands and swung down and then made poses in the air like the superman pose and the splits.

Next, we had morning tea. It was juicy oranges, lemon slices, and zuper dupers. My group had a hut building next. It was difficult and exhausting at first but then refreshing because we got water poured on our heads and in our hats.

After the hut building, we had lunch. We had to make our sandwiches. We made salami, carrots, and lettuce sandwiches. Once lunch was over, the groups went to our 3rd activity, but everyone couldn’t do it because of the heat and exhaustion. It was the low ropes course.

Finally, we got to relax before going mountain biking. By the end of it, we were all exhausted.

After our delicious dinner which was chicken snitz, gravy, potatoes, peas, and corn we had a movie night. We were so lucky that we got to stay up and watch a movie called ‘Finding Nemo’.

Once we got back to our dorms we played silent ball with our squish mallows. Then we had to go to sleep, overall it was an excellent day.

At Galilee, we use a program called Big Write and VCOP to support our planning, teaching and assessment of writing. It is a whole-school teaching approach that aims to improve our student’s writing standards. Big Write and VCOP is made up of 4 main elements- Talk, VCOP, Big Write and Criterion Scale. For the program to achieve peak success, all 4 elements are required.

Let’s learn a little bit more about each element:

Big Write: An uninterrupted session of writing that occurs every fortnight. The night before the Big Write, children are given a homework task, which is to TALK (no writing). They should discuss what they're going to write about the next day and mentally prepare so that they're ready to start writing. This is called 'Big Talk homework'. On the day of the Big Write, teachers will focus some lesson time on improving knowledge of VCOP. They may play games with the aim of increasing children's understanding of each topic. Students then begin their independent writing session. They write in silence to promote concentration and creativity. The time spent writing depends on their age and grade level.

Criterion Scale: We use this scale to mark student writing. It creates consistency and confidence across the school in marking writing and it becomes a guideline for planning and setting goals to help every student move to the next stage in their writing.

Here are some ways in which you can help your child at home with their writing:
-  Talk! Talk! Talk! Ask your child to describe anything and everything.
- Write! Write! Write! Encourage them to write letters, a diary, send postcards, make lists, write stories and illustrate them.
- Play vocabulary games, e.g. Give your child a WOW word in a sentence and ask them to guess what it means.
- Use a dictionary or a thesaurus to find interesting (WOW) words to use.
- Explain new vocabulary to your child and give them examples of how to use them.
- Read often and widely with your child.
- Take it turns to tell an oral story. One person starts it, the other then says what happens next.
- Look at a picture or a photo and describe it together.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation Preparation

The Year 3 students are preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  As this Sacrament fits in perfectly with Lent, it would be wonderful to discuss this Sacrament with your family.
