Year 5 Excursion: South Melbourne Market

On Wednesday 23rd November, the Year 5 students went to the South Melbourne Market as part of our Inquiry and Maths units.  They have been learning about the food pyramid and how it’s important to have a balanced diet and eat everything in moderation.  The students explored the market and identified shops that sell healthy foods.  To practice their Maths skills, they each had a budget of $20 that they could spend at two different shops to buy a healthy snack and a special treat. Some of the students were lucky enough to be given some free samples from the shopkeepers! We had lots of fun!

Our Prep Buddies

On Friday 2nd December on Galilee Day the Year 6’s visited their Prep buddy class, Prep EF.  We had a chat, laughed and talked about how well the preps have done in their first year at Galilee.  It has been such a great experience helping out the Preps this year and we all hope they have had a great start to their schooling life.

The things we have enjoyed most about having a Prep buddy is being positive role models and a friend to them. We all have watched our buddies grow up so much this year and we will miss them next year. The Preps have taught us year 6’s how to be kind, caring and patient.

All the best for next and we hope to see you in the future.

Year 6M

Digital Licence

Throughout Term 4 the year 6’s have completed a digital test online to make sure our safety is ensured for next year at highschool.  This test includes 4 modules and separate tests about cyber safety and what to do in dangerous situations, helping others online, empathy online and more.

Each test gives you a scenario of 3 people revolving around a certain topic.  You then observe the scenario and answer questions about the 3 people.  More questions appear about how YOU would have dealt with the situation.  All the tests also have a video, again revolving around the topic.

The reason we are doing these tests is because it is around this age that people discover and sign up for social media including Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, etc. Doing this course will help us become more aware of cyberbullying and using online apps and social media safely.

Principal of the Day - Darcy Mackintosh

Darcy’s parents were the highest bidders on the Spring Block Party’s live auction item of Principal of the Day.

On Tuesday 13th December Mr Mackintosh - our principal of the day - made sure it was a special day filled with fun for the students.  All students wore casual clothes and the gold coin donation raised funds to buy additional sports equipment for the school.  Students were given an extra 15 minutes of play at recess and had zooper doopers.

Principal Mackintosh shared cupcakes with his peers and even enjoyed a special lunch in Mr Millar's office.

A message to the Preps from Year 1....

Last week Prep P had 3 visitors from year one to share all the reasons why they will love being in year one next year.  Anthony, Aaron and Lucas read out some of the ideas that the year ones provided.

“We learn from mistakes. We work as hard as we can. We never stop when we make mistakes,” Jailon.

“It is so creative and special. You meet new people and make friends,” Lucy.

“You get to meet new people, learn animals and habitats. You get to go on learning journeys. You write a lot and try your best and don’t give up,” Haell.

“You learn all the parts of the human body like the kidneys and how to divide into 25. But the best part of grade one was making new friends and trying our best,” Dean.

Eadaoin from Prep P thanked the year ones for coming to encourage us to be brave when we commence in year one next year.

Year 6 Graduation Mass

The Year 6 Graduation Mass was celebrated in the evening on Monday December 12th at Sts Peter and Paul Church. The students and their families participated with members of the School Leadership and staff to commemorate this Milestone and acknowledge all that the students have learnt and experienced during their time at Galilee. We wish them all the very best as they graduate to Year 7 at their new Secondary Schools.

Advent Fundraiser

This Advent in collaboration with the parish of St Peter and Paul, we collected so many GENEROUS donations for the Friar’s Kitchen. Brother Michael and the volunteers were so happy to receive all the toys, non perishable foods, pet items and Christmas treats for the people who visit the Friar’s kitchen in our community, as well as the St. Kilda mums.

Brother Michael explained how even a small tin of food speaks volumes to the needy in our community, because it tells them how much people in our school community really care about them.

Many thanks once again for your kind donations and for truly making a difference.

Art work for Royal Children's Hospital

Last week the children of Galilee have been busy coloring in pictures of the Nutcracker.  The artwork will be going to the Kookaburra ward at The Royal Childrens Hospital, where Tae Yoon has been receiving treatment.  This year the Kookaburra ward will be decorated for Christmas in the theme of the nutcracker.  It is a privilege for Galilee to be involved.  We are sending over 400 completed pictures. A big thankyou to all the children for their beautiful artwork and all the staff who helped with cutting out and laminating the pictures.

Year Level Representatives 2023

We are calling for nominations for 2023 Year Level Reps.  Please see the attached documents:

- Year Level Representative Application Form

- Year Level Representative Registration Form *to be completed once application has been accepted

- Year Level Representative Role Description - Code of Conduct

- Parent Communication Group Guidelines

Please note that as this role is a Year Level Representative position (not a class representative) your child’s 2023 class allocation has no bearing.

As of 2023, the school has introduced a new year level representative policy in order to be more inclusive and far reaching to the school community. This means that a parent or guardian cannot be a Year Level Representative for consecutive years for the same year group. ie, Prep 2022 and Year 1 2023.

In situations where a year level does not have any applications, the school will approach parents or guardians on a more direct basis in order for new volunteers to take up the vacancy. In such instance, a role share or role term rotation may be created.

Please register your interest by emailing a completed application form to Parent Partnerships Leader, Carmen Carnovale - ccarnovale@gsm.vic.edu.au

A very big thank you to Peta Langford and Danielle Gordon for their never-ending commitment, tireless work and abundant enthusiasm in leading the GPA as Co-Presidents in 2022. They have been an incredible team together, conquering their first major fundraiser, supported by the SBP Committee and have reignited the flame of the school community spirit after 2.5 years of COVID-19 restrictions. I have personally worked very closely with them both on many events and it has been an absolute pleasure.

Peta and Danielle will be stepping down from their role as Co-Presidents and will remain in the GPA as General Executive Committee Members.

Our new President and Vice-President of the GPA will be announced in 2023.

I look forward to working with the committee and the wider community in 2023.

If you’d like to become a member of the GPA, please email me ccarnovale@gsm.vic.edu.au.

Have a safe and merry Christmas,

Carmen Carnovale

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)

This year has been a rewarding year for Council with our meetings, formal and informal taking care of usual council business with finance, events, facility, policy updates and upgrading governance and induction systems and processes.

An effective school advisory council involves the members engaging in conversations about key educational and school issues and challenges and actively being involved in the development of the School Strategic Plan across various levels and projects.  The Council has continued to do just that this year supported with great enthusiasm and achieving a variety of improvements led by our Principal Simon Millar.  Simon continues to strive for the improvement of the school and engages Council with great support and diligence on all initiatives and business.

The members have a clear and consistent process for decision making and understanding its roles and responsibilities as espoused by SAC compliance documentation.  The SAC devoted time to communication of ideas and recommendations for the growth, improvement and development of school processes and activities.  Council also concluded by sharing ideas and planning suggestions for uptake in 2023.

In closing out the 2022 school year, I would like to thank all the members of SAC.  Namely the hard working leadership team, Simon, Amy and Carlo.  The parent members for their expertise, commitment and time.  Council efforts and support have been tremendously productive and beneficial to the school.

A big thank you and acknowledgement to our school Principal Simon Millar for his commitment and support.  Thank you to Paul Mapley who attended meetings as a staff contact on relevant subject matter liaising with Council members.  Also to Council staff member Carmen Carnovale for her commitment to projects and efficient timelines.

Special thanks for their great service on Council should also be mentioned to members not returning next year due to completed tenure and/or departing our school, David Gloag, Nicole Loriente and Darren Catherall.

I have enjoyed my time serving on Council and with my school departure at the end of 2022, I would like to thank the school leadership, staff and members for my time on council.  I have enjoyed being of service and received extensive support over the years with all council business.  A special mention to Wendy, Tegan in the past and Iris for all the background support with administration matters connected with Council business, always going above and beyond.

Congratulations to the new council members appointed to commence in 2023.  I wish Simon, Carlo, Amy, Carlo Pizzini as new Chair, continuing and new members on Council a successful year ahead.
